What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are tiny posts, usually made of titanium, that act as artificial tooth roots. An oral surgeon or periodontist surgically places implants through the gums and into the jawbone. Over time, the titanium in the implants fuses with the bone and becomes part of a patient's anatomy. Then, the implants can support a dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture.

Because they securely attach to the jawbone, dental implants are widely considered the best option for replacing missing teeth. At the end of their dental implant treatment, patients have a fully functional and natural-looking smile that can radically improve their quality of life.

The Dental Implant Process A Treatment Timeline

We will provide you with detailed care instructions so you can enjoy the long-term benefits of dental implants for the rest of your life.
We will provide you with detailed care instructions so you can enjoy the long-term benefits of dental implants for the rest of your life.

When you first visit our office in Freehold, NJ, for a dental implant consultation, Dr. Sternberg will conduct an evaluation and take X-rays to determine whether the health, depth, and thickness of your bone are adequate to support a titanium dental implant. If you and your dentist agree to proceed with dental implant treatment, we will help you schedule implant surgery with a trusted oral surgeon or periodontist.

Dental implant surgery is typically performed by a specialist like an oral surgeon or periodontist. During the procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions in your gums. Then, he or she will insert the implants through the gums and into your jawbone. After the implants are in place, the incisions are usually closed with dissolvable sutures.

Before implants can support a dental restoration, they require a healing period of three to six months to fuse with the jawbone. During this period, some patients can receive a temporary crown, bridge, or denture that will fill any gaps in their smile.

Once the dental implants are firmly attached to your bone, they will need to receive abutments. Abutments are pieces that screw onto dental implants and connect the implants to the restoration. After abutments are placed, a second healing period of a few weeks is sometimes necessary for the gums to recover.

When your implants are ready to support a permanent dental restoration, you will return to our practice in Freehold, NJ. Dr. Sternberg will have designed a durable, natural-looking crown, bridge, or denture based on your exact specifications that he will attach to your dental implants.

Now, thanks to the wonders of modern dentistry, your smile will no longer be affected by a lost tooth. You can eat all of your favorite foods and speak without ever worrying about your prosthetic coming loose. We will provide you with detailed care instructions so you can enjoy the long-term benefits of dental implants for the rest of your life.

See How Implant Placement Works

During implant placement surgery, a titanium post is surgically placed directly into the jawbone. This implant acts as a prosthetic tooth root and fuses to the bone in a process called osseointegration. Implants provide maximum stability as well as much-needed stimulation to prevent jawbone atrophy. An abutment is placed over the implant, followed by your dental restoration to completely replace your tooth.

Dental Implant Candidacy Factors

Bone Density

When a tooth is lost, bone loss can occur at the site of the missing tooth roots. If your jawbone has experienced too much atrophy, it may be too weak to support a dental implant. Fortunately, bone grafting procedures are available that can improve your candidacy.

General and Oral Health

Patients with certain health issues, like diabetes and autoimmune disorders, may not qualify for implant surgery. Furthermore, oral health concerns like gum disease will need to be addressed before your mouth will be ready for dental implants.

Tobacco Use

Smoking and chewing tobacco are detrimental to your oral health and can inhibit your body's natural healing response. If you have a tobacco habit, you should plan on quitting several months ahead of dental implant treatment.

Dr. Dennis has been our family dentist since 2013.  He has installed several implants and numerous crowns on both myself and my wife.  His work is meticulous and perfect.  Recently I needed to replace 4 very old crowns and have a new one installed.  These crowns are so well made that you can't tell them from my real teeth.  He and his staff are very friendly and I highly recommend him.
